tribe update – communications, people

fyi, AT and i are working on getting direct access to the tribe company blog so we can post updates regularly there.

we’ve appreciated all the comments and passion around tribe and are reading all of them (which isnt easy!).

more transparency…tribe does make enough revenue from ads and user premium accounts to cover its basic costs. btw, darren has done a great job in managing this and getting the whole operation into a more affordable facility. people are right that tribe lacks the resources for new development, but i’d like to remind everyone that most users HATE change to their web utilities (when’s the last time you saw craigslist change?).  people are right in pointing out that whether tribe is a for profit or non profit it has to show a profit to sustain. AT and i remain committed to this outcome and believe that is entirely doable.

patti was kind enough to send in her thoughts on how to make tribe a better service – ie. listen to the core users. my goal right now is to see tribe achieve long term sustainability first. and most important to that is to find a long term steward to take over from darren. we have received interesting notes from people who would be interested in doing way more with tribe. great. we agree that tribe can eventually be a terrific business serving the social media needs of its core users.

pls keep the comments coming and we promise to soon post updates directly on tribe. you can also find these posts on my tribe profile.

  1. Thanks for the continued – and efforts at better – communication.
And now the first true test arrives: Tribe has been down for about an hour now; hopefully there’s someone in Darren’s absence to get it back up.

  2. Yeah, I also thank you for posting this. But tribe is still down. I just got back from errands and logged in and started laughing. *sigh*
That’s the way it is, I suppose.

  3. Great work, i know it seems overwhelming at times. let me know if i can help in any way. i’m excellent at performing ultra-repetitive tasks quickly and without error until the job is done (among other things)

  4. Hi, Mark….great to know you are really and truly committed to TRIBE. As a Dancer and an Artist and a Writer, I know that TRIBE provides a GREAT SERVICE to the Art world, as well as Culture (in general). My belief is that progress doesn’t start in politics or in religion or even in institutions….it starts with the ARTIST! The ARTIST is the one who brings in the new energies and exposes them to the public! THAT is how IMPORTANT the work you are doing IS!!!!
Besides this, TRIBE helps people exchange ideas. I, personally, have had my mind and heart expanded by communicating with all kinds of people….it helps me understand my world better and really and truly be a better person.
THAT SAID, I went to Tribe last night and this morning, and there is only a blank page there. My heart is sad.
Also, I tried to pay for a “STAR” through TRIBE this week, and it was making me register for PayPal….so I didn’t do it. I have had trouble with PayPal memberships before….it has been hacked into. I DO pay through PayPal IF it just helps with the transaction, rather than making me JOIN PayPal. This is done, for example, at Meleah’s website:
    http://www.meleah.com/
I have had several TRibe-friends TRY to buy stars and have trouble with the situation. Perhaps a set-up like Witchvox would remedy the horrendous business interface.
I don’t mind the advertisements, but I feel some of them are intrusive and sexist. However, I choose to ignore them.
TRIBE has lots more potential to bring people together and to change the world for the better. Good luck, Mark….and I WILL be sending a check to get my “STAR”!

  5. Thanks for the feedback. I really hope you can work this out to keep tribe going. I’ve been to many many other sites (us and Euorpean) hoping for the same kind of social interaction and it just isn’t there. When you instated paid memberships, I think you missed the opportunity for those paid members to also shop via tribe by not giving them the option to still view the ads. I would have definitely done that, if I had been able to.

  6. The one cynical thing I have to add to my message is that *none* of what I’m suggesting is new. Three or four years ago, I was saying the same things– listen to your core users, figure out what the site *is* rather than what you think it should be, and build on the good and wonderful things about the site.
If I had a dollar for every time I said that, I would long ago have bought the site myself.

  7. Please remove the hatred of the Jewish religion and rallying cries of the destruction of America and wishful genocide:

“When you let go of all the emotion you’ve been stuffing down, all the fear and all the sadness and all of the energy that comes when we get a disappointment — when you let go of that energy, you clear out the pipes so that the Life Force, which is also known as Love, can flow more freely which raises your frequency because that’s really what is required to raise your frequency is the allowance of a free flow of Divine Love Life Force through you. Paradise on Earth is actually a state of being rather than a location as many of us have been taught and we can all learn to find our way back to Paradise.”
~ Julia Rogers Hamrick, spiritual-growth facilitator since 1982, intuitive counselor, energy channel and author of Recreating Eden.
Once we become a full member, or “Fellow of the Craft” we then learn to study in Nature’s university.
“Civilized people depend too much on man-made printed pages. I turn to the Great Spirit’s book which is the whole of his Creation. You can read a big part of that book if you study nature. You know, if you take all your books, lay them out under the sun, and let the snow and rain and insects work on them for a while, there will be nothing left. But the Great Spirit has provided you and me with the opportunity for study in nature’s university, the forests, the rivers, the mountains, and the animals which include us.”
~ Tatanga Mani or Walking Buffalo, Stoney Indian, Canada (1871-1967)
If the Creator wishes a truth to be known, this truth is made manifest in Nature for people to observe and understand.
“Make an effort to know of spiritual things from your own observations of nature, because all truth can be found in Nature. There is a spiritual beauty in the realization that all the world has been deliberately made or created, and is in perfect balance ecologically, and that is not by chance. Lastly, this knowing is based upon spiritual revelation of the truth to the individual. When it happens for you, then you KNOW… and no one else can tell you otherwise.”
    ~ Father Eli (1913-1983)
Mother Nature can tell us so much if we take the time to chat with Her and are aware enough to watch and listen for Her answers!
Do you spend time with Mother Nature? Do you ask questions and then watch for Her answers to be revealed in the mysterious ways of Her choosing?
What kind of a relationship do YOU have with our Earth Mother?
    It’s worth thinking about…

  8. You know, if you can’t devote your attention to fixing this great social network then you need to turn it over to someone has the wherewithal and the focus that apparently you lost some time ago. There are tribers here willing to do stuff. Are you paying attention? Are you getting back to those offering to help you? Did you read the article in the SF Weekly today? Do you even care?

  9. Okay, so now the staff is down to zero, the phone is disconnected, and there’s no one to fix the next crash unless you plan to go get your hands dirty at 2am when it happens. You happily promoted not only continued stability but improvements and new features in return for the voluntary support of your user base.
    WHERE’S THE BEEF?
PLEASE… just publicize Tribe as available to an interested group of stakeholders and free yourself from the responsibilty for the resentment of thousands of irate former users.
    Please.

  11. Since you are having such a hard time with space and “sustainability”…why not allow, or fix the delete function for threads and pictures.
Those who wish to remove those items could and it would create space, along with those who wish to continue using a service that you are lacking interest in, as you are preoccupied with Zynga, may clear up some of their “Alt” profiles, or size down some of what they have posted to clear some space that will allow less strain on your server.
You aren’t going to create any great feelings for yourself, or your site, by holding our stuff hostage, by not allowing us to delete it, but you are guaranteed to create a bunch of irritated people, who will post elsewhere about how crummy tribe.net is and that is the quality that they should eventually expect with Zynga.
New people can’t even join tribe.net right now, so..what’s the point, other than nostalgia, which is dying for many people… quickly.

  13. I’ve been a big fan of tribe, its the best group of users and the best interface I’ve ever come across. But lately, I find it more like slumming to go there. The site has a less than 50% chance in my experience of being willing to let me in. If its not a maintenance issue, its a capacity issue. The place has more ill will than interesting spunk, at least in my recent experience. I’ve found an alternative where many tribers are escaping too, and I’m strongly considering packing up a 4 year membership (currently a paid one) and moving on to a greener pasture. Tribe isn’t fun or lively any more for me. When I can get in, the quality is so dicey, and the feel so stagnant, I’m not sure being there is where I want to be at this point. Love Tribe, always will, but why should I stay? Half the features are broken and half the time, so is the site. Staying at a place for the users and the content, neither of which can I access half the time is a fading reason to stay. Many folks seem to feel the same and are at least temporarily abandoning ship. My bags are packed, “delete profile or not” is my only quandry right now.
I find it sad the owner isn’t putting more efforts towards it, and somehow can’t get access to his own company’s company blog? Dude! Two years later? *rolls eyes* Please get more serious about Tribe, Mark. Glad to see you are trying, but it would be nice to feel you were *really* trying. It would have been nice to see a lot earlier too, this is hardly a new state of affairs.
